I believe it is a combination of our life’s passions and life’s experiences that help define our life’s purpose. Some are fortunate enough to stumble upon their purpose early, but I suspect for most of us, it takes a little more living to figure out what really matters.

I’d like to share with you what matters most to me. For many it will surely resonate, for others it will not. No matter, either way I will be satisfied to just raise awareness.

According to both the National Institute of Mental Health and the World Health Organization, one in four people will be affected by mental health or neurological disorders at some point in their lives. My family tree is affected. The branches are wide, the roots deep. And it is no fun. But it is real, and I acknowledge it and the ongoing challenges that come with it.

Gratefully, I am finally not alone.

After almost two decades of learning and trying everything I could to help my loved ones, I found something that helped me. NAMI – The National Alliance on Mental Illness.

You see, what matters most to me is to ‘end the stigma’ associated with anyone living with mental health challenges, as well as for their families who love and care for them. Be they a child or an adult, this starts by just listening…

So if you live with a mental health condition, please repeat after me:

“I promise to speak up and to not be SILENT.”

And if you love and care for someone who does, please respond in kind:

“I promise to not judge and to just LISTEN.”

Have you ever noticed how ‘silent’ and ‘listen’ share the same letters? Funny, isn’t it? After all, if we are silent, no one can listen, and if we want to listen, we must be silent.

If you or someone you love struggles with mental health, please know help exists and is within your reach.
