15 Aug “The winter of 2014 may have been notable for being the coldest winter in 20 years, but for me, it was the closing of the Loehmann’s empire.”
I owe it all to Loehmann’s!
I grew up shopping and ‘curating’ my style at Loehmann’s in Garden City, Long Island, NY and then later at the Crossroads Shopping Center in White Plains, NY. (Stay tuned for more about my relationship with Loehmann’s, Life Lessons Learned While Shopping #11.)
Now there is just no getting around it. It was my therapy, retail therapy if you will. Whenever I was having ‘one of those days’, (and I had my share, a husband, three boys, a dog, a cat, a private speech practice, you get the picture), I would take myself to Tarrytown Road in White Plains, where for 3-4 hours, (yes I said 3-4 hours), I would systematically go through every item; no cursory look- see for me. I meant business. Now because we all have a budget in mind, like a good gambler, a good shopper always know their limit and must be willing to walk away from the table, I mean the clothes rack. Of course some ‘Back Room’ items were left in the dressing room, (please note the price never deterred me from at least trying it on, after all a girl can dream). But more often than not, the price was right, and I was more than happy to sign the adoption papers at the register. In the old days Loehmann’s had a no return policy, so one really had to commit, come to think of it maybe the revocation of that policy is what ultimately caused their demise…hmmmm.
Anyway it was a sad, sad, sad day when after 93 years, on February 26, 2014, Loehmann’s closed it’s final door in NY. The winter of 2014 may have been notable for being the coldest winter in 20 years, but for me, it was the closing of the Loehmann’s empire.
